This IS a great idea. We had a tough evening last night. Though our daughter is homeschooled, she goes to a homeschool enrichment school. I find out last night that she has 6 essays, a literature paper, and 2 Spanish lessons due today, and she has barely started on any of them. Can you say 'indigestion?' She just doesn't care, it seems, and I care too much!
I understand this completely. We're helping our son study for a Math test to avoid summer school. He's having difficulties, but we hope he'll do well and avoid summer school.
Thanks Bill--This is a great support tool for the class. The academic success factor can be so draining. With our son, he relies too much on external locus of controls for homework (and most everything else). It usually sounds like, "Well its the teacher, or unfair questions, ....." He takes very little responsibility for himself. To try to build his internal locus, we have allowed him to experience some degree of failure when the stakes are high to try to get his internal locus of control to increase. This is a fine line however--not too much failure, but not too little. We usually say, "You have a choice, you can do well now or take it again--either way you will have to figure out a way to pass the class." We have also provided incentives for him when he puts out the effort to study. We have also had to break down what it means to study in small parts, 1)take notes, 2)avoid distractions, 3) reread, etc.
